A BELGIAN organisation that trains rats to detect landmines may use the animals for a demining programme in Angola. The Antwerp-based charity, Apopo, may work with DanChurchAid on the project following the success of a similar operation in Mozambique, it said in a statement yesterday.
Angola has an estimated 6 million landmines scattered across the country following its 27-year-long civil war, according to the UN's Integrated Regional Information |Networks. One in every 415 Angolans has been disabled by the explosive devices, according to its website.
"If Angola is to resolve its considerable landmine problem, there is a need to strengthen the current capacity," Apopo said.
The African pouched rats, used in the plan, can cover six times more ground than human deminers using metal detectors, according to Apopo.
Last year Apopo cleared 310 000m² of terrain in Mozambique of landmines. - Bloomberg
