Using Facebook as a business tool

I often hear people in business saying proudly that they are not on Facebook.

I understand many of the reasons why; however, if used in a professional and discretionary manner, it can boost business.

If you do not want to share your private life, then don’t, and if you still don’t want to use it, just make sure that you understand it – as it is a widely used communication platform.

Facebook is a popular social networking service and website that sees users creating their own personal profile or page, adding others as friends to exchange information, messages and automatic notifications when they make changes. Users join groups that appeal to them.

Many businesses use Facebook pages or groups to create their online community and to encourage a following. In order to create a Facebook page for your business, you yourself need to have a Facebook profile as this is how you will login and maintain your page.

Like any social media platform, you will need to register and create your own account (if you don’t already have one); then, either on the login page or at the bottom of your home page or profile page, you will see various links – one of them being “create a page”. Click on this link and follow the easy set-up steps.

Once your page has been set up and is ready for viewing, recommend that your friends “like” the page.

Every person who “likes” your page will then see any posts, pictures, shares and status updates that you post – so make sure you post things that are interesting, and talking to the people who are fans of your page.

Over the last few weeks, I have written about various aspects and channels of social media. It cannot be seen in isolation.

All components have to be integrated into overall business strategy, with specific policies and procedures.

If you are the leader of the team, give clarity and boundaries for them. Provide the box before you ask someone to think outside of it.
