What to read in the second-quarter 2016 edition (volume 67) of Personal Finance magazine, which is available in retailers for only R32.95.

Cellphone contracts. Most of South Africa’s 23 million-plus cellphone users are prepaid customers, once the underclass of the connected population, but now doing all the things contract customers do, at much lower cost. Is the writing on the wall for contracts that tie us to the network providers for 24 months at a time?

Online grocery shopping. Buying your groceries online and having them delivered is one way of avoiding temptation in supermarket aisles, but is it a practical, value-for-money option you could get used to?

Income tax returns. Whether you submit your tax returns yourself, or employ a tax practitioner to help you, some planning and organisation could help to make the income tax process a little less painful this year.

Restraint-of-trade agreements. If you are asked by an employer to sign a restraint-of-trade agreement, or are already bound by one, you should make sure you understand your rights and the purpose and implications of such agreements.

Boutique asset managers. Small asset managers, or boutiques, walked off with more than half the certificates and awards at this year’s Raging Bull Awards ceremony. What may give these companies the edge over their larger peers?

Premium credit cards. If you have a no-frills credit card for convenience, rather than a prestige card that marks you out as a high flyer, do you wonder what it takes to move into the luxury league? And are the benefits more than a mirage?

Insuring your jewellery. Jewellery is all too easily lost or stolen and is often irreplaceable, but insurance can provide the comfort of fair compensation and the opportunity of filling the void with similar items you will grow attached to.

When tenants don’t pay. When a tenant misses a rental payment, the landlord has a dilemma: take a hard line from the outset or be lenient in the hope of reaching an amicable agreement. We explore the options.

Evicting tenants. Contrary to popular belief, tenants, once installed, can be evicted, but you need to follow due procedure.

Default pensions. National Treasury wants retirement funds to provide default pensions. Three umbrella retirement funds have anticipated the introduction of default pensions by allowing members to transfer their savings into annuities they manage at retirement.

Hedge funds. Hedge funds, often seen as risky and opaque by investors, have come out of the shadows. The regulation of hedge funds may make investors more comfortable with investing in them. We report on the questions you should ask before you take the plunge.
