The task team in charge of the ANC Youth League in the Western Cape has been disbanded, ANC provincial chairman Marius Fransman has confirmed.
He said the team, which was headed by City of Cape Town proportional representation (PR) councillor Senzeni Mphila, had failed to hold two consecutive elective conferences since being established in May 2010.
“There is no ANC Youth League leadership in the Western Cape currently,” Fransman told the Cape Argus.
“We are waiting on the national leadership of the league to either establish a new task team or facilitate the (provincial) elective conference.”
The provincial youth league was set to elect its chairman last month after a failed elective conference in December. But proceedings did not start as organisers scrambled to secure a quorum for the conference.
The league needed 338 delegates for the conference to go ahead, but only 280 had registered.
The main contenders for the top post are Jonton Snyman and Luvo Makasi. The race turned nasty when Snyman’s supporters accused Fransman of conducting a smear campaign against their candidate, who is loyal to Julius Malema, saying Fransman was openly lobbying for Makasi to win.
Fransman has rejected the claims that he was backing a particular candidate.
