CAPE TOWN’S very own green lung – the Green Point Park – has officially been opened and is expected to be a hit with young and old.
At the opening yesterday, families were entertained with live music, jumping castles, giant dancing puppets and face painters. Fitted snugly between Signal Hill, the Cape Town Stadium and the sea, the park offers Capetonians a spectacular inner-city escape.
Emo Adams, The Rudimentals, Heavenly Quartet and Icon Jazz Band provided the live music. Mayor Dan Plato officially opened the park.
“This is an exciting day for the people of Cape Town. Yesterday the city celebrated its 359th birthday,” Plato said.
While there had been teething problems, he said he was pleased that the park had become a reality.
Urging pupils to visit to learn about ecology and indigenous plants, Plato said the biodiversity garden “lets you explore, touch and experience a variety of plants, bushes, wildlife, and learn about the first inhabitants of Cape Town”.
The Green Point Park is a World Cup legacy project which, says Cape Town Stadium director of operations Lesley de Reuck, offered locals a variety of options.
The park can be booked for private parties and weddings.
l The Green Point Park is open from 7am to 7pm daily. Entrance and parking is free, with 24-hour security provided.
