TopTV boss, Eddy Mbalo, and his wife, Sally. The pay station is applying to air three porn channels.
“It’s not porn.”
This is what On Digital Media’s chief Eddie Mbalo wanted to make abundantly clear on Thursday.
The TopTV chief executive said that in his dictionary, porn was defined as sexual material without any artistic merit – a definition which couldn’t be used for the content on TopTV’s three new proposed channels.
“What is being presented on these channels is material that is scripted and has been carefully crafted to suit the target audience.”
Mbalo, pictured, said it was definitely not “XXX” or “hard core” because the content still had to meet certain standards and that was why he preferred the term “adult entertainment”. “It is responsible content meant for couples.”
The first of three proposed channels is Playboy TV. It is already available in more than 70 million homes in more than 70 countries. According to the presentation shown during Thursday’s application, Playboy TV consists of series tailored to both a male and female audience.
“It is based around the celebration of beautiful women. They are never degraded and the images are a reflection of each woman’s sexuality and unique personality.”
Desire TV will showcase “sensitive erotic and sensual plot-driven scenes alongside evocative educational programmes and entertaining parodies”.
Private Spice, considered Europe’s biggest adult service, will screen episodic and feature-length films produced by a range of adult studios.
The three channels will form part of a separate bouquet to TopTV’s other offerings, and Mbala said there were plans to introduce a PIN system to prevent children from accessing the content.
