Jazz fest tickets sell out in a flash

Tickets for the Cape Town International Jazz Festival have been sold out.

That includes day passes, weekend passes and corporate tickets for the 14th annual jazz festival, to be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on April 5 and 6.

The lucky thousands who have bought tickets can expect to see a range of artists, from Cuban old-timers Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, featuring Omara Portuondo, to the Zen-funk quintet from Switzerland, Ronin, to American songbird Jill Scott.

From the US we will get jazz guitarist Norman Brown, saxophonist Kirk Whalum and trumpeter Rick Braun playing together as BWB; trombonist Steve Turre, also known as the guy who can play seashells; and Gregory Porter.

The Robert Glasper Experiment, who won the award for best R&B album at this year’s Grammys for Black Radio, will be joined on stage by MF Doom, who is English-born American underground hip hop artist Daniel Dumile.

The US’s Ravi Coltrane, one of a trio with Jack DeJohnette and Matt Garrison, is not able to come and will be replaced by saxophonist, alto clarinettist and flautist Joe Lovano, also from the US.

From close to home, Khuli Chana, AKA and Mi Casa represent the not-so-jazz but oh-so-popular side, while Claire Phillips, Auriol Hays, Thandiswa Mazwai and Zonke are just some of the woman jazz vocalists in the line-up.

Forty artists and four DJs have been announced.

One more artist will be added to the line-up, however.

This year, the slot reserved for a band from the arts and culture focus schools features the Eerste Rivier High School Band.
