AHEAD of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on Monday, the nation can download his birthday song as the country’s more than 12 million pupils gear up to sing to Madiba at exactly the same time.

The nationwide singalong is a joint initiative between LeadSA, the Department of Basic Education and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

A call has gone out for all school pupils to sing Happy Birthday to Mandela at 8.05am on Monday. Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has issued a directive to all schools to assemble and a message will be read asking them to give 67 minutes of their time to a good cause.

ExactMobile has now made it possible for the birthday song to be downloaded on to your cellphone. SMS the word “MADIBA” to 32929 at a cost of R1 a download.

Part of the lyrics of the Mandela birthday song – which are also available on LeadSA’s Facebook page – are as follows:

Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday to you

Happy birthday, dear Tata

Happy birthday to you

We love you, Tata

We love you, Tata

We love you, dear Tata

Happy birthday to you.

Nelson Mandela thina siyakuthanda unguTata wethu. UTata wethu.

Madiba’s birthday song ends with

Hip hip… hooray!!!”
