Killarney is back in action this weekend.

Motoring Writer

AFTER being closed for almost a month during a period of international sports car testing, Killarney is due to reopen this coming holiday weekend with a kaleidoscope of high-speed action.

The street cars are first in line, with a two-day show featuring drags and Street2Strip racing on Friday, followed by a street car open track day on Saturday. Other attractions include the last stock car meeting of the year – but not of the season – on Saturday evening, while the kart circuit has been set aside for an eight-hour motorcycle enduro from 10am on the same day.

The drag strip activity starts at 9am on Friday. Note that a R350 MSA licence is obligatory for all and medical cover and membership is required for drivers competitive enough to complete the run in under 13 seconds. They will then be timed and qualify for awards.

The Street2Strip category caters for those in the over-13 second bracket, where am MSA licence is not required and no times or trophies are presented. This will be in operation from 5.30pm to 10.30pm.

Saturday begins with a safety briefing at 9am, essential for newcomers. Charges for an unlimited number of laps around the full circuit until the close at 2pm are R200 for WPMC members, R300 for non-members and R50 for passengers.

Drivers are segregated. In the easy group, no passing is allowed under braking and corners are negotiated in single file. The experienced group may outbrake other cars but not pass anyone in corners. The pro group is unrestricted.

Cars will be given a safety check. No excessively noisy entries will be accepted. The dress code for drivers and passengers includes long-sleeved tops and trousers, closed shoes and an SABS approved helmet.

There is a new braai area opposite the original pit block, while a modern toilet facility has been completed behind the new pit area. In addition, the access road has been levelled and resurfaced.

Gates open at 8am. Youngsters under 12 free, everyone else pays R30. Saturday’s spectator fee for the endurance race is R40, while only the competitors pay to ride on the street car track day.

Don’t forget December 26 is the 10th annual Fast, Furious and Glorious All Starz celebration. This one-day event promises plenty of action on and off the track. MSA Drag racing will be from 8am to 5pm, followed by Street2Strip from 5.30pm to 10.30pm. Watch the press for details.
