Cape Town – Celebrities, fashion influencers and punters came out to play in numbers at the inaugural Sun Met celebrated with GH Mumm on Saturday.

The race was won by Whisky Baron.

The affair, previously the J&B Met, is hailed as the “richest horse racing day in Africa”.

The many marquees hosted the likes of the Miss South Africa contestants, Johannesburg-based public figures, Cape Town socialites such as Cindy Nel and TV personalities such as Leigh-Anne Williams.

Spotted in the celebrity crowds was actress Amanda Du-Pont wearing an outfit by Klerksdorp designer Anel Botha.

The theme, “Decades of Glamour”, spanned several fashion eras, from the hippie and bohemian style of the 1960s to the 1990s denim and minimalism.

Du-Pont was dressed in 1950s chic, with a fitted shoulder-revealing floral dress and a race-day hat.

“My friends and I came here as us. The theme celebrates individuality, and we ended a bit of our personalities to the theme,” she said.

There was also the forever dapper trio from I See A Different You, Justice and Innocent Mukheli and Vuyo Mpantsha, who looked dashing in their suits. They have made an international name for themselves by capturing and celebrating Soweto.

Also spotted, in the GH Mumm marquee, was Khanyi Mbau, and Da L.E.S, who was dressed by House of Ole.

Chad Saaiman, dressed by Spree, went for the 1990s music video look.

The vibe was noticeably different from previous years. There were fewer marquees that at the J&B Met; however, the intimacy and the chance to interact with different celebrities and personalities was welcomed.

“We went for a vintage theme based on Mad Men,” said Qokela.

She wore a 1950s inspired dress by Merwe Mode and hat by Crystal Birch. Chogugudza wore a Markham suit.
