Cape Town - Cape Town’s themed costume party, the Mother City Queer Project (MCQP), ring in the festive season at Cape Town Stadium on December 14.
It seems it’ll be a case of “saddle up for the ride of your life” or “boldly go where no man has gone before”, as the theme announced last night is “Space Cowboy”, event director Ian McMahon said.
“We’re paying homage to years of spectacular sci-fi and space movies, and we’re looking forward to see what the people of the 2014 World Design Capital will put together for the MCQP red carpet.”
For the first time in the event’s history the gates will open early, so from 5.30pm there will be a “fête-like start to the day” with food stalls, entertainment at the Sundowner Live stage, and a chance to see the fancy dress on show, before things hot up for the evening event.
first MCQP took place in 1994, with “The Locker Room Project” theme, and over the past five years has consistently attracted between 10 000 and 13 000 revellers.
Regarded as one of the city’s 12 top annual events, an economic impact assessment shows that it draws crowds from far away, with 29 percent of partygoers coming from outside Cape Town.
McMahon described the event as a “celebration of diversity and freedom of expression”.
There are seven dancefloors catering to everyone’s taste, from psy-trance to house, electro and disco. There will also be four “experiential areas”, each with its own theme and music style.
American musician and singer-songwriter Steve Grand will make a special appearance. Grand is acclaimed as one of the first openly gay male country singers in the US.
General access tickets, on sale at www.mcqp.co.za, start from R260 for an October-only early bird special.
VIP tickets are also available, which entitle you to priority parking, access to a massage area, and entrance to an exclusive lounge and bar area where you’ll be treated to complimentary drinks. There will also be a VIP exclusive area with relaxed music and special treats. Twenty-two Privé Suites are available, holding up to 20 people each, decorated with comfortable furnishings and equipped with a complimentary bar and snacks.
