Cape Town - A Grade 6 pupil from Edgemead Primary School died after reportedly falling from the ceiling in the school hall, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) said on Friday.

Kyle Grace died on Thursday afternoon when he reportedly accessed a staircase behind the stage and found his way into the ceiling and fell about eight metres, Jessica Shelver, spokeswoman for Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schafer, said in a statement.

“The school called paramedics, who reportedly declared the learner dead on their arrival. The police are investigating.

“A full team from our district office left for the school immediately, including counsellors and psychologists," Shelver said.

 

“The incident has traumatised all concerned. Four school counsellors from a neighboring school joined two district psychologists to provide counselling support,” she said.

 

The district will provide further counselling on Friday as required, she added.

 

“This is an unspeakably tragic loss of such a young life. Our heartfelt condolences are with Kyle’s family at this very difficult time.”

Sergeant  Noloyiso Rwexana, South African Police Services spokeswoman confirmed that an inquest case has been opened for investigation

“According to information on May 25th 2017 at 14:30, a 12 year-boy old fell and died due to his injuries. Circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation.”

 

Comments and tributes have poured in on social media for the young boy who passed away.

Cheryl Louise Green: “My heart goes out to the parents that lost their child at Edgemead Primary today. I might not know you but you are in my prayers. Rest in peace my dear sweet child.”

Tanner Brady: “May the little boy who lost his life at Edgemead Primary School rest well and have a lovely time up in heaven. So sad, life is cruel.”
