UPDATE: Police investigate after cyclist killed in freak accident

Cape Town - A leisurely public holiday bicycle ride ended in death for a 55-year-old cyclist on Wednesday morning. 

"Pedal cyclist accident fatality - Glencairn Expressway Southbound, Kommetjie," traffic department spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout sent via an alert. "The cyclist pedaled up the mountain, lost his footing and fell into the roadway. 

"A minibus taxi then allegedly drove over the cyclist," she said.

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said an investigation was under way.

"This office can confirm a culpable homicide case has been opened after an accident involving a cyclist and a Toyota Quantum. Investigation continues."
