A LOCAL race car driver celebrated a victory of a different kind at Killarney race track when his girlfriend agreed to marry him following an unexpected proposal.
On Saturday afternoon, an overwhelmed Petro Ackerman burst into tears when her boyfriend of 13 years, Jaco Lambert, waved a poster asking for her hand in marriage from the race track.
After completing his first lap, Lambert, 24, from Maitland, slowed down, stopped the car where Lambert was standing with other spectators and whipped out a poster that read: “Petro, will you marry me?”
Ackerman, 25, said that at first she was filled with concern because she thought that the there was a problem with the car when she saw the vehicle slowing down.
“When he slowed down and stopped in front of us, I immediately thought that something must be wrong… Never in my wildest dreams did I expect it,” she said.
“I burst into tears – I was so overwhelmed,” she added.
Lambert said: “When I went up to put the ring on her finger all of the women around her were crying – even some of the men were crying.”
He said that he had initially wanted to propose at a rugby match at Newlands a few months ago – with the idea of having the proposal displayed on the scoreboard.
But he was turned down and opted for a more original idea.
“I had to arrange it with the organisers before the event, because we’re not allowed to stop on the circuit for safety reasons,” he said.
Lambert, who had been driving a Ford Escort sponsored by Fred Phillips, did not complete the second heat for the day.
The couple have yet to set a date for the big day.
