SIX-TIME Grammy Award-winning artist Skrillex is in Cape Town to perform at one of the city’s most anticipated electronic dance music (EDM) gigs at the Cape Town Ostrich Farm on the West Coast tonight.
Skrillex (real name Sonny Moore), who is called the high priest of dubstep, will perform in Cape Town, Joburg and Durban as part of his international Mothership tour over the next three days.
Top South African electro DJ Haezer will reportedly open for Skrillex.
The Los Angeles-born electronic musician and songwriter took home Grammys for best dance recording, best dance/electronica album and best remixed recording, non-classical in 2011.
He has won six Grammys.
In 2011 he was nominated in the BBC’s Sound of 2012 Poll and was named MTV’s EDM artist of the year.
Yesterday, Skrillex, right, joined South African artist Niskerone and the non-profit Bridges for Music for a workshop at the Guga S’thebe Arts and Cultural Centre in Langa.
The Niskerone-hosted workshops included sessions on bass music and technology, as Skrillex engaged with up-and-coming DJs.
It was the second Bridges for Music workshop, after one was held with Richie Hawtin and Black Coffee two weeks ago.
Organisers say the aim is to “enrich the local music culture, exposing it to new sounds, local and international artists, and creating a creative and cultural experience through music”. - Cape Argus
