Having lost the Test series 3-0 in England, the South African netball team will regroup at the end of January for an even bigger challenge - playing Australia away from home.

On the Proteas' tour of Britain, they beat Wales 53-41 in their first game of the tour in Cardiff and Scotland 51-39 in Glasgow.

On Monday South Africa were outplayed 61-37 by the English in Birmingham, after a 56-44 defeat in the first Test in Newcastle and a 64-48 loss in Manchester.

The goal difference in the first two games suggested that South Africa were on the right track and their win against Scotland was a boost for the team going to the final Test. But they were thrashed by a faster, stronger and formidable England team in the third Test.

Coach Marlene Wagner said the England series was a learning curve for her young team.

"We are not looking for excuses but we are a team of youngsters. The experience has been great for the players as for most of them, it was a first international tour," she said.

Lanky Proteas goal-shooter Sindisiwe Gumede was neutralised by the English defence and did not pose any threat in the second Test in Manchester.

"Sindi was not at her best as the English defenders doubled up on her," said Wagner.

Gumede's miss was Boland's lethal shooter Christine Markgraaff's hit.

Markgraaff started in Gumede's place in the final Test. After combining outstandingly with goal-attack Manzo Machoga in the last quarter of the second Test, she deserved the start.

"Christine is a brilliant player, very strong and fast," said the coach.

Wagner admitted that her team was no match for the "fast and furious" England.

"We don't have enough players in the team who were working up to that standard. We are lacking in terms of body strength but we are getting there," Wagner said.

About South Africa's leaking defence, Wagner said: "Our defenders don't get too many chances to practise against goal-shooters who move as well as the English."

South Africa lost a three-Test home series to Australia in March and will need a miracle to beat the Aussies on their home courts.

"We suffered a few of injuries after the Australian series early this year. Maybe we will see some of the former players back in the team," said Wagner. Trials for the Australian tour will be held at the end of January.
