Sporting greats sign on for Argus

Followers of the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle race on March 14 will see some familiar faces in an unusual setting.

South African stars who will be taking part in the world's biggest timed cycling event include former Springbok rugby captains Francois Pienaar and Bob Skinstad, while South Africa's most popular cricketer, Makhaya Ntini, will also be trying out his cycling skills over the 110km route.

Two of Argentina's sporting superstars - tennis player Gabriella Sabatini and rugby legend Hugo Porta have also confirmed that they have entered the race.

Sabatini - who win the US Open in 1990 - was one of the top woman tennis players in the Eighties and early Nineties and Porta, who played for the Pumas in the Seventies and Eighties, is widely regarded as the best flyhalf the world has ever seen.

He will be doing the race for the seventh time. local cricket hero Makhaya Ntini. David Bellairs, Co-Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, organisers of the event, is thrilled about their participation.

"Last year it was Matt Damon and this year it's a Who's Who of sport," he said.
