SIXTEEN people were injured when the taxi they were travelling in overturned along the N1 near Kraaifontein earlier today.

ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said paramedics found the taxi lying on its side near an embankment and had to use a ladder to get to the patients.

“Once all the patients were moved across the embankment, they were transported to various hospitals in the area for further medical treatment. Other motorists had also stopped and offered assistance to the injured,” said Meiring.

Provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said the road had been closed off to traffic for an hour to allow emergency workers to work safely.

Meiring said the cause of the incident was being investigated.

Two motorcyclists died in separate accidents at the weekend.

In the first incident a motorcyclist died after he collided with three vehicles along the R27 near Melkbos.

In the second incident, a motorcyclist believed to be in his early 30's, was killed along the N7.

“It is understood that a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction lost control and rolled over into oncoming traffic.

Bystanders on the scene explained that the motorbike rider collided into the overturned vehicle. Sadly he sustained fatal injuries during the collision,” said Vermaak
