FIFTY-four passengers were injured when two Golden Arrow buses collided and caught alight, after one of the drivers swerved to avoid a car in Khayelitsha.

Both bus drivers have been suspended pending an investigation.

Golden Arrow Bus Service spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer said: “According to witness information and our preliminary investigations, the collision occurred when one of our drivers attempted to take evasive action to avoid a vehicle which was attempting to make a U-turn.

“In the process the bus collided with another one of our buses coming from the opposite direction.

“Fifty-four passengers sustained what are believed to be minor injuries and were transported to Khayelitsha Day Hospital.

“Both drivers were in shock and have been suspended pending further investigation.”

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said a case of reckless and negligent driving was investigated.

“No one has been arrested,” he said.
