TWO unidentified men were killed and set alight by an angry mob on an open field in Sweet Homes Farm, Philippi, after they had allegedly robbed an elderly resident on her way to a bus stop.

According to residents, the woman had passed a local shop on Sunday morning when the two allegedly accosted her.

A resident, who did not want to be named, said: “It was still very early and dark. Nobody was going to see anything. Her brave screaming saved her.”

The resident said community members responded and found the woman wrestling two men while holding on to her bag.

“And as if the community was ready, people came in numbers immediately. They (the alleged attackers) were severely beaten.”

Another resident said the two men did not live in the area. “We are not used to people robbing here.”

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said police were investigating after the charred bodies of two people were discovered.
