ARCHBISHOP Emeritus Desmond Tutu was readmitted to a Cape Town hospital for observation Tuesday night, the Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said.

His readmission comes days after his discharge from hospital following a week of treatment for a persistent infection.

The 83-year-old’s read- mission was not related to his cancer treatment, his daughter Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu said.

His oncologist confirmed his prostate specific antigen level was “pleasantly low”.

“His doctors considered it prudent for him to return to hospital for observation. He’ll have a few days of bed rest while his medical dream team brings the situation under control and determines the next course of action, if any,” Mpho Tutu said.

The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate is to remain in hospital until the weekend, she said.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation said it hoped Tutu would get well soon and return home to his family.

“We have not been in touch with the Tutu family for more details, but we wish him a speedy recovery,” said foundation spokesperson Neeran Naidoo.

Tutu was discharged from hospital on July 21 after a week of intravenous treatment for a persistent infection. He and his wife Leah celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this month.
