Seven buses were set alight and four badly damaged in a protest in Nyanga, Cape Town, Golden Arrow Bus Services said.

Spokeswoman Bronwen Dyke said people pulled drivers out of two buses at the Nyanga Bus Terminus around 6am and set the vehicles alight.

From there, the crowd moved to Govan Mbeki Road, where four drivers were pulled from their buses and assaulted and the buses set alight.

Dyke said the group damaged four more buses but were stopped before they could set them on fire.

A bus driver was assaulted nearby and one more bus set alight.

It was believed the crowd could be protesting taxi drivers, said Dyke.

Western Cape police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said the public order policing unit and fire brigade were on the scene.

No arrests had been made.

“Stone throwing occurred at Khayelitsha taxi rank in Site C.”

Commuters and road users were asked to avoid these areas and make use of alternative roads and transportation.

Dyke said it was impossible to run bus services in Nyanga at present. The company was instead operating from Borchards Quarry and the Manenberg police station.
