Trigg Jewellers’ staff at Cavendish Square were held at gunpoint when four men stormed in and robbed the shop yesterday.

The unknown men made off with jewellery of undisclosed value .

Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the robbery occurred at 11.30am and that no arrests had been made. He said no one was injured.

In September last year, seven armed men walked into the same shop, threatened staff and smashed the display windows, making off with an undisclosed number of watches.

Trigg is situated close to one of the mall’s main entrances.

“This office can confirm that a case of business robbery is under investigation. According to information today at about 11.30am four unidentified armed suspects robbed a jewellery shop in a shopping mall in Claremont,” said Van Wyk.

At the scene yesterday, the shop’s entrance was cordoned off as staff and police gathered evidence.

A witness who asked not to be named as she feared for her safety, said: “I saw one guy with a gun and that was all I needed to see for me to take cover. I did not feel anything (at the time) because it happens so often.

“It does concern me about my safety because if they start shooting, everybody in this vicinity is in danger.”

Cavendish Square marketing manager Lana Maree said all retail areas were secured and operational, and all stores were trading as usual.

“Cavendish Square confirms that an armed robbery took place today at approximately 11.15am, at Trigg Jewellers. Four armed robbers fled the scene at around 11.25am. The incident is under investigation by the SAPS,” she said.

“We wish to thank our tenants, shoppers and the public for their support and co-operation. We also appreciate greatly the effective action carried out by SAPS and Cavendish Square security personnel.”
