THE Flowing Nomads yoga team had spectators intrigued while demonstrating their routine of yoga exercises during a celebration of International Yoga Day at the V&A Waterfront on Tuesday.

Yoga Day, which is celebrated on June 21, was declared an annual event by the United Nations in 2014.

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice attributed mostly to India.

Dressed in tights, 45 yogis from the Flowing Nomads demonstrated yoga muscle-flexing exercises of an acrobatic nature.

They also demonstrated meditation practices that seemed to make time stand still.

Thrilled shoppers captured the eight-minute demonstration on their smartphones.

Flowing Nomads founder Lauren Mensikovas said the event was to acknowledge the World Yoga Day approved by the UN.

“We are showing Cape- tonians what yoga can do for people. It’s a recognition of the power of something so simple. We would really like Cape Town to become a leader in the yoga revolution the world seems to be going through.”

She urged everyone to participate.

“Yoga allows you to dig deeper into yourself. It is not so much about physical practice but spiritual connection. We use it to connect with our souls. It is a way of life.”

Nobantu Khuthumani said she had always mocked yoga until she saw it performed live.

“I always took it for granted. I used to associate it with people who had nothing to do. But now I realise what it does for a person’s mental fitness.”

Luthando Mavuso said: “Wow! This is all in one. You can see it in their eyes that they are meditating while exercising at the same time. It requires maximum concentration.

“If I can get used to it, I would be able to avoid distractions. This thing is good for mental stimulation. This is good for self-introspection.”
