STAR: Orlando Jones
THE longest-running comedy festival in South Africa is back with another star-studded line-up to rock the Mother City from September 3 to 9. The 16th Nando’s Cape Town Comedy Festival will feature seven stand-up comedians at Artscape.
International acts are Orlando Jones, Michael Winslow, Louis Katz, Brian Haner, Lil Rel and Loni Love. Local funny man David Kau will host.
Jones began his Hollywood career as a writer on NBC’s A Different World, Fox’s Martin and writing/producing Roc Live. Oscar-winning director Barry Levinson cast Orlando in his first feature film Liberty Heights. He has continued working with film directors like Ivan Reitman (Evolution), Mike Judge (Office Space) and Oscar Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia).
Orlando was also nominated for an Ovation Award by the LA Stage Alliance for his performance in August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize winning play Fences. From his portrayal of Clifford Franklin in football film The Replacements to Drumline, to dancing in the Broadway revival of The Wiz, Jones continues to thrill.
Graça Comedy Showdowns, on August 7, 14, 21 and 28 at Mercury Live at 8pm, are an extra part of the festival where contestants fight it out during the “heats” using their quick wit. – Arts writer
