THE Press Ombudsman’s office has dismissed two complaints against the Cape Times.
On behalf of the Presidency, the acting deputy director-general, Sifiso Moshoetsi, complained about a Pale Native column by Max du Preez on March 27, “President’s war room is on full alert”. He said there were sweeping statements which were “untrue and unfair”.
Deputy Press Ombudsman Johan Retief said that unlike a news report, a column was an expression of an opinion.
In the second complaint, Mario Wanza (for United Democratic Front members) complained about a February 24 story, “Chaos at Zuma speech”.
He said the story, by Xolani Koyana, mistakenly implied a UDF group had heckled a Zuma speech. Retief found that Wanza had declined an offer to discuss the article, so he could not say it was incorrect.
