ABOUT 50 people gathered in the CBD on Wednesday to hand over a memorandum, demanding among others, that advertisers stop advertising with the SABC.

This formed part of a national demonstration by the Right2Know campaign, which has also called on Hlaudi Motsoeneng to be axed.

Marchers carried banners saying “Claim your Freedom, Claim your Voice” as they marched to the Cape Chamber of Commerce.

In Johannesburg people marched to FNB and SAB Miller to hand over the memorandum. The same scenes unfolded in Durban when people gathered at the Vodacom head office. Other demands include an end to the rampant financial wastage and mismanagement of SABC and irregular bonuses; the scrapping of the SABC’s illegally revised editorial policies, which have turned viewers away and further tarnished the SABC’s image; and that the SABC board that enabled Motsoeneng’s incompetent reign and patronage be urgently reconstituted.

In the city yesterday, the protesters marched peacefully to the Cape Chamber of Commerce, where marketing manager Denise Kolbe received the memorandum. Right2Know provisional co-ordinator Khaya Xinto said: “They must take away from advertising and remove Hlaudi. SABC management should stop enriching themselves. We want the truth and a democratic SABC for all.”

A person, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “The SABC must stop advertising alcohol, and they must showcase programmes that help build the community; down with censorship – information should be revealed, not concealed.”
