Loyiso Nkohla and several members of the Ses’Khona People’s Rights Movement have thrown their weight behind the DA after weeks of speculation.

In a statement, the DA reiterated that Nkohla would not officially join the party until his outstanding legal matters have been resolved.

He had been found guilty of throwing human faeces at Cape Town International Airport in 2014, along with Andile Lili, Yanga Mjingwana, Ben Dyani, Jaji Diniso, Bongile Zanazo, Thembela Mabanjwa, Bantubakhe Mgobodiya and Wandisile Mkapa.

They were sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years with strict conditions, including house arrest and rehabilitation programmes. They were also each given community service of 16 hours a month.

Yesterday, welcoming “500 members” of Ses’Khona to the DA, mayor Patricia de Lille boasted about her party’s performance in the city council, saying it was working to bring “positive change to people’s lives”.

“The ANC has changed. It is more concerned with self-enrichment than helping the poor. The ANC in the City of Cape Town has previously used various organisations to make the city ungovernable.

“But it is clear to see many ANC members have rejected this plan. They know the DA is a party that is working hard to deliver in all communities, and especially to the poor. They don’t want to be part of this corrupt plan. They want to be part of the progress the DA is making,” said De Lille.

Lili said he was shocked when he called Nkohla on Wednesday, only to be told that some members of Ses’Khona had a meeting with the DA leadership in the City.

“I was concerned about why they were meeting without informing us as leaders of the organisation,” said Lili.

Ses’Khona members had been aggrieved at the ANC’s list processes, claiming skulduggery had seen them booted from the party’s list of ward candidates.

“It is his constitutional right to join a political party of his choice, but the fact is Ses’Khona is viewed as an enemy of the DA on the basis of service delivery which is dividing whites from black. Hence there are two (Cape) Towns,” said Lili.

ANC leaders are expected to resolve Lili and Nkohla’s complaints over lists on Wednesday.
