CAPE TOWN mayor Patricia de Lille outlined a number of priorities to residents of Nomzamo in Strand yesterday, with electricity and additional communal taps high on the city’s list of service delivery promises.

Speaking at a meeting attended by about 300 residents, mostly DA members, in the Nomzamo Community Hall, De Lille promised families living on privately owned land that their waiting for proper services might soon be over.

“We have signed a deal with Sanral (South African National Roads Agency Limited). Sanral has given the City permission to provide electricity.”

Urging those in attendance to oust the ANC in the ward and to vote for the DA in the elections, she said “a vote for the ANC in Cape Town is a vote for suffering”.

“The only thing they are good at is stealing and being corrupt. Do not believe those who say we haven’t delivered here.”

Security had to be beefed up when a group of about 50 ANC supporters danced and sang as they tried to enter the hall.

De Lille said the DA government delivered 100 title deeds, opened up a clinic, and upgraded hostels, the taxi rank and a park in the area.

She said 160 000 Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) jobs had been created since the DA came into power.

“Now, we are asking for another five years to continue the work we started. Give the DA an opportunity to serve you – and to do better and improve on what we have done.

"We cannot do this if people continue to vote for the ANC.”

De Lille told the crowd the ANC mayoral candidate, Xolani Sotashe, claimed to represent the people, but in council he had voted against the extension of basic service delivery to the poor.

“He is the same person who voted against a DA proposal to council to write off arrears on municipal accounts for indigent residents.”

DA member Siyabulela Ngoma said he would vote for the DA because it was the only party with an action plan.

Ngoma, a former ANC member, said he took a decision to join the DA because ANC leaders were corrupt and did not take care of their constituencies. He said it is not true that the DA is a white party.

“All the DA is asking is a chance to govern this ward. I will cast my vote for them and see what they can bring on the table.”

Sotashe had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publishing.
