POLICE have made an about-turn with regards to their information about the death of a runner along the Kasteelpoort trail near Camps Bay on Sunday.

“The circumstances surrounding a male runner’s death are being investigated after he was fatally stabbed while running at Kasteelpoort, Camps Bay, this morning. No one has been arrested as yet,” police spokesperson Andre Traut said on Sunday.

But yesterday he said: “Preliminary investigations on the scene suggested that the man was a victim of crime and that he sustained a stab wound. However, after a thorough investigation, it was discovered that he possibly fell and sustained the fatal wound as a result thereof.”

Asked about the stark difference in the police reports, provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said there may have been a different team of people at different times, and preliminary findings could sometimes change based on the information given by experts on the scene.

SANParks spokesperson Merle Collins said they had been told by police on Sunday that a murder docket had been opened.

Table Mountain National Park management

said yesterday the identity of the man was being withheld until his next of kin were notified and encouraged park users to observe basic safety measures.
