THIS year Kirstenbosch celebrates 21 years of concerts as well as its centenary. The 2012/2013 season of Old Mutual Summer Sunset concerts features the likes of Zebra and Giraffe, Prime Circle, Arno Carstens, The Parlotones, Jimmy Dludlu, Freshlyground, Goldfish and Natasha Meister as well as some newer acts.
With their new album Evidence recently released, Prime Circle will take to the stage on the slopes of the mountain on December 23.
Celebrate the end of the year with newcomers to the Kirstenbosch stage Yoav and Tailor on December 30. Yoav uses an acoustic guitar and live looping set up, while Tailor’s music flits from modern folk to blues rock.
Arno Carstens, who has just released his fourth solo album, will entertain on January 6, followed by The Parlotones on January 13. The band will relocate to Los Angeles next year so the concert will be a fitting send-off.
On January 20 Jimmy Dludlu will bring his brand of jazz to the stage.
Old Mutual has chosen to highlight some of the eclectic musical talent that the country has produced, don’t miss Toya Delazy and Lindiwe Suttle on January 27, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse on February 17, Ringo Madlingozi on March 17 and Mi Casa with Natasha Meister on March 31.
Freshlyground will celebrate 10 years in the South African music industry with a performance on February 3. Folk fans should not miss out on the Cape Town Folk ’n Acoustic Music Festival on February 10. Artists will include Ard Matthews, Steve Newman, Guy Buttery and Nibs van der Spuy, Andrew James and Steady Tiger, Digby and The Lullaby, Robin Auld and Wendy Oldfield and Tombstone Pete.
Conducted by Martin Panteleev, the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra will take to the stage in the final concert of the Cape Town International Music Festival on February 24. French violinist Philippe Graffin will feature.
Catch Goldfish on March 3, and Jeremy Loops on March 10. Shadowclub will bring their rootsy blues rock to the stage on March 24, with Gangs of Ballet opening the concert.
Finally Johnny Clegg will bring the series to a close on April 17.
