Très chic, this new type of picnic

Chicnics are the new picnics. Haven’t heard of them?

It’s exactly what the name implies – a very chic picnic with scenery to match.

I was a chicnic virgin until visiting Allée Bleue recently in the lovely Franschhoek valley.

Don’t expect your ordinary run-of-the-mill picnic spots either. No, there are no picnic blankets here, unless you prefer one which the farm will gladly arrange for you.

It’s all about furbishing their guests with only the best – parasols, restaurant-style tables and acres of the greenest grass.

Once we were seated at our booked table, our attentive waiter took our drinks order and patiently explained how the process works.

Yep, it works the same as a restaurant, only you’re served with a picnic basket of delectable, yummy goodies.

But the upside is that because it’s an outdoor venue, the kids get to run around and play until they drop from sheer exhaustion.

There’s plenty to keep them entertained, from a jumping castle to a shaded sandpit. The play area is within view of the eating area, so mom and dad can sit back and relax while keeping an eye on them.

But back to that picnic basket. Think wholesome, farm-fresh produce like home-made pesto, freshly-baked ciabatta and flavoursome wraps – and that’s just for the adults.

There’s a specially-packed lunch for children filled with
fresh veggies, cheese and
a trail mix of sorts.

What I like about the menu is that when booking, the restaurant will cater to your dietary requirements. Vegan? No problem. Lactose intolerant? It has definitely got this – but you would be missing out on the creamy cheese platter.

Besides picnics, Allée Bleue caters for private functions like conferences and weddings.

It also has accommodation and a bistro-type restaurant if chicnics aren’t your thing.

Apparently, its wines are world class. And lets not forget about the herbs that you see displayed in your local supermarket.

The estate was bought in 1999 by Friedrich-Wilhelm and Elke Dauphin, and since then has been going from strength to strength. It certainly has a winning formula – and no doubt one it is sticking with.

More info: Allée Bleue’s chicnics are available from Mondays to Sundays and public holidays from 11am-4pm.

Available options are the standard picnic, vegetarian and kiddies, priced from R195 per person.
