THE oldest living woman to have attended Pretoria High School for Girls, where pupils this week protested against “racist” school policies, said more consideration needed to be put into rules by the staff and pupils.

Georgina Harwood, 101, made headlines last year when she skydived 3 000m from an aeroplane for her 100th birthday.

She was a pupil at the school from 1930 until 1935.

Harwood said when she attended the school, it was for whites only and there were no rules when it came to hairstyles.

“We conformed to a general understanding that our hair needed to be plaited. If we did not want to plait it, we would cut it very short.

"I had a boys cut at one stage. But I can’t compare life back then to how it is now.

"Children have different upbringings and black and coloured pupils are now allowed to attend the school.

"The school and the pupils need to reach an understanding where they may embrace their hair without it looking untidy.” – Staff Writer
