MUSICIAN Jimmy Nevis entertained hundreds of fans and people he grew up with when he “came back home” to perform at Nantes Park in Silvertown yesterday.

Hundreds of people also made their way to Gugulethu for the inaugural #Indibano, where artists and DJs performed in NY50.

Nevis, who grew up in the adjoining Vanguard Estate, was among a group of local music acts who performed at the free Concert in the Park.

The Bridgetown Theatre Company, with the Joeline Daniels Pulse Entertainment, afforded the opportunity to local acts such as the youth band dubbed The Visitors, The Rudimentals and members of Pulse Entertainment.

Heideveld resident Sadiyah Cupido said it was inspiring to see local artists giving back to the community.

“It’s nice seeing local artists giving free concerts because most people in our communities are underprivileged and can’t afford to pay for tickets to see celebrities. We brought our children along to come and be part of this.”

For Bridgetown resident Leigh Walker the concert was about having a family outing while enjoying local music.

“This is a nice environment; a cool spot for family time with all the performances on stage – and Jimmy Nevis is here. Who isn’t going to be here for Jimmy Nevis? And my favourite song is 7764,” she said.

In Gugulethu, more than 200 people from as far as Worcester flocked to NY50 for a relaxed street party.

Artists from all over the Cape mesmerised throngs of revellers with pulsating songs during the #Indibano inaugural annual event in Gugulethu.

A total of 30 Djs and 15 artists shared a stage under the #Indibano banner, the brainchild of local artists.

Organisers Mawande Sobethwa said they came up with the idea after noticing that Cape artists were neglected. “That is why we decided to launch this event. This is where we will be meeting to showcase our talent.”

Khayelitsha residents Sinalo Namba, 24, and Precious Joni, 26, swopped church service for entertainment.

“We decided not to go to church today so we would be the first to arrive. Happiness comes first. You live only once,” they said.
