THE Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week was launched with a red carpet event at the City Hall yesterday.

Fashion Week is an African Fashion International (AFI) Spring/Summer runway presentation, which gives a platform to many SA designers to display their latest and trending brand collections and accessories.

Speaking at the opening, mayor Patricia de Lille said Cape Town was committed to creating opportunities for creative industries to thrive.

“We recognise that the creative industry, if nurtured properly, can be an influential actor in the economy of the city,” she said

Clothing range owner Michelle Ludek told the Cape Times the city had supported designing for a few years, which should motivate young and aspiring designers.

Fashion Week will run until Sunday, with most of the shows being presented at the CTICC.
