Supertubes was firing for three days during the Billabong Pro J-Bay event this year. Downgraded from a world championship tour to a six-star world qualifying series event, it was open to 144 surfers, including many South Africans. Big name locals who paddled out included locals Sean Holmes, Dale Staples and Jordy Smith, and from other parts of the world - Frenchman Joan Duru, Hawaiian John John Florence and Australian Mitch Coleborn. In the end, Brazilian Adriano de Souza - ranked four in the world - took the title. Spotted among the crowds who flocked to watch was J-Bay surf legend Bruce Gold.
