THE Robben Island Museum (RIM), in partnership with the national Department of Tourism (NDT), will host an open day tomorrow by giving away 1 600 free tickets to locals for a return trip to the island.
RIM spokesperson Bongiwe Nzeku said the objective of the open day was to create awareness on the importance of preserving Robben Island as an iconic national and World Heritage Site. “The open day is also fundamental to creating access for local communities and the cultural enrichment of South Africans,” she said.
Nzeku said the open day would also form part of Tourism Month celebrations. “Locals will be treated to a ferry ride and a prison tour.”
Free tickets will be issued to locals through community radio stations, local newspapers and non-profit organisations.
