London - Working out at the gym and sharing fitness machines could make you sick, experts have warned.

Moist, sweaty gyms are the “perfect breeding ground” for germs, with the risk of becoming ill doubling at this time of year from the surge in customers trying to stick to New Year resolutions, said microbiologist Dr Laura Bowater.

She said: “You end up with lots of people working-out in close proximity to each other. And it’s here that viruses can spread easily. The handles of the bike you’re riding, or the weights you’re lifting, can easily be contaminated.”

Dr Bowater, senior lecturer at Norwich Medical School in the University of East Anglia, added: "If you exercise outside you won’t be in an environment full of germs.”
