A MOTORIST alleged to have hit two boys, killing them, and to have run away, abandoning his vehicle at the scene in Delft, is to appear in court today.

Police said that the driver did not have a valid licence.

Siyamthanda Mandlatse, 6, and Andakhe Qoyi, 8, were apparently playing beside Symphony Way when the vehicle hit them on Saturday.

The driver is said to have got out of the dark green Daewoo he had been driving and fled.

Paramedics found the boys with severe injuries, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said.

“Unfortunately, there was nothing that paramedics could do for them and they were declared dead on the scene.”

Bystanders told the paramedics a station wagon had hit the boys. The paramedics could not find the driver at the scene, Vermaak said.

Witnesses told officers – who had been on patrol and went to the scene – that the driver had lost control of the vehicle, police spokesman Frederick van Wyk said yesterday.

They had also identified the driver, a man of 33.

“Upon a telephonic request by the detective, he handed himself over to police a few hours later,” Van Wyk said.

The man faced charges of culpable homicide, driving without a valid licence, leaving an accident scene, and failing to report an accident in which people had been seriously injured. He is to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court.

ER24 spokesman Vermaak said:

“It is understood from bystanders that a station wagon collided with the boys on the side of the road.”
