Mandela: A life in black and white
From the man to the statesman, Cape Times chief photographer Michael Walker has captured Nelson Mandela throughout the years.
An occasion that stood out for him was Mandela's inauguration as South Africa's first democratically elected president in 1994.
"I remember it was a bloody hot day and I had a lot of equipment to carry. I had to park at Centurion Cricket Ground, take a bus from there and then walk to the Union Buildings. I was below the stage and shot from a distance away. That picture was part of a portfolio that later won an award," Walker said.
He had photographed Mandela on several occasions, not purely for work purposes, Walker said.
"It was more than just for work with Mandela being Mandela. You might never get to shoot such pictures again, not of Mandela," he said.
In this picture essay, Walker showcases Madiba from behind his lens.
