A CITY teenager has made the country proud by winning a bronze medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad competition in Thailand this week, while the South African team managed to improve the country’s ranking by nine positions.

Yaseen Mowzer, 17, a Grade 11 pupil at Fairbairn College in Goodwood, is expected to arrive back in the city today, along with his teammates.

Thanks to the team of five – Mowzer, Rudner, McGregor, Nicholas Kroon, Sanjiv Ranchod and David Broodryk – South Africa was ranked 55th out of 104 countries. They were led by Dr Dirk Basson, who praised their performance. Yaseen’s father, Dr Zakir Mowzer, 42, said he was “excited he has done well”. I am proud of him. A lot of it has to do with his own hard work. He wanted to get a medal and he’s got it.”

Yaseen is now looking forward to going to India, where he will compete in the International Olympiad Informatics.
