FEARING for the safety of her teenage daughter on a shopping errand when gunshots rang outside their Elsies River home, Elsebie Pietersen rushed outside, only to be fatally shot in gang crossfire .
The 41-year-old mother of seven children aged three to 21 had just returned from work and was relaxing with her family when she heard the first gunshots after 7pm.
“She ran outside because our 14-year-old daughter was still at the shop.
“A few seconds after she left, I heard another shot go off, and that’s when she ran back into the kitchen screaming that they had shot her,” said her husband of 16 years, Kevin Adams.
When the Cape Times visited her home in Portable Court yesterday, Adams was busy with funeral arrangements.

“I don’t think they (the couple’s children) know that their mother isn’t alive anymore, he said.
“We sent them for counselling after it happened because they were shaking after seeing their mother (shot) like that.”
Adams said after Pietersen was killed, the shooting stopped, but he feared it wouldn’t be long before it started again.
“We live in the middle of (rival gangs) the G-Unit and the 28s, so they shoot here day and night. She (Elsebie) was always scared to let the children play outside because of the guys shooting when the children come out of school.
“She didn’t deserve that; she loved her children and everyone in the area liked her.
“I just hope the government can do something about the gangs because we don’t know what to do anymore,” he said.
Police spokesman November Filander said a 30-year-old man was arrested after community members alerted them to his whereabouts.
“He was arrested without a firearm.
“We have opened a murder docket and the man will appear in the Goodwood Magistrate’s Court (within 48 hours) charged with murder,” he said.
