FORMER finance minister Nhlanhla Nene is keeping his cards close to his chest on whether he will go after his ex-boss in a court when the National Prosecuting Authority swoops on Pravin Gordhan.

Nene was yesterday not available to comment on whether he has agreed to testify against Gordhan following his meeting with the Hawks on Thursday.

The former finance minister was axed from his position in December following President Jacob Zuma’s inexplicable decision to remove him.

The decision rattled the markets and wiped R500 billion off the South African economy.

Nene did not respond to questions yesterday on whether he had agreed to co-operate with the Hawks and give evidence against Gordhan.

The unit is said to be preparing to tighten its case against Gordhan on the rogue unit at Sars by lining up Nene as one of the State witnesses.

Nene served as Gordhan’s number two at the Treasury from 2009 until 2014 when Zuma changed the composition of the cabinet after that year’s elections.

However, 18 months later he axed Nene in a decision that shook the country.

But the president has been having an uneasy relationship with Gordhan since his return to the Treasury.

Gordhan has been locked in a battle with the Hawks over the rogue unit at Sars since early this year.

Nene moved out of the public sector after he was axed.

He has remained out of the public eye since then and has given no indication if he would consider returning to politics.

It remained unclear if he has decided to co-operate.
