Former transport minister S'bu Ndebele will have to wait seven months to hear if representations made to drop corruption charges arising during his ministerial tenure are successful.

Ndebele appeared briefly in the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria yesterday. The matter arose from the illegal extension of the electronic National Traffic Information System in 2010, a contract worth more than R2 billion.

Attorney Linda Dube said the prosecution was still considering its representations. “It is too early to determine the strength or merit of the state’s case, because they have their evidence and we have ours.”

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Luvuyo Mfaku said speculation the case would be dropped was completely false.

Ndebele had allegedly “directly or indirectly” stood to gain R10.26 million. The case was postponed to November.
