The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) on Friday said it has received reports of violent attacks on journalists from the SABC who were covering the march against foreign nationals in Pretoria.

In a terse statement, Sanef said the journalists were robbed of their cellphones. Their equipment was also taken by demonstrators in the protests in Pretoria.

"We would like to appeal to members of the community to remember that journalists need to be able to do their work without fear or favour," said Sanef.

"We would also like to urge the journalists to report the incidents to the police and call on the police to investigate and charge those responsible for the attacks."
