A Crowdfunding campaign has been set up to pay for the rehabilitation of a firefighter volunteer, Deon Engelbrecht, who sustained severe head injuries after he fell while long boarding in Knysna.

The 21-year-old landed in ICU at Groote Schuur Hospital after he cracked his skull from the base to behind his left ear. He was wearing a helmet at the time.

He was then flown to Groote Schuur on July 26 after a night’s observation at the George provincial hospital.

Yesterday his mother, Ronelle Engelbrecht, said: “Deon has been released from hospital last week, and the doctors have ordered that he rests in bed for a whole two months.

“He needs a lot of attention as he has memory loss and is confused and also does not know many of his family members and friends.”

Doctors have confirmed that he will make a full recovery after six months, but for his recovery he needs some help.

Anyone who wants to contribute can contact Ronelle Engelbrecht on 083 754 2340 or Wynand Steyn (uncle) on 083 310 0118.

Alternatively, check the Back-a-Buddy page that was created by Steyn, Deon’s uncle, at www.backabuddy.co.za/fundraising-for-deon.
