Nothing dodgy about SABC deals, claims CEO

SABC group chief executive James Aguma has denied there was anything dodgy about a raft of contracts worth several million rand signed during the festive season when there was no board to approve the deals.

Briefing Parliament's portfolio committee on communications, Aguma did not deny the signing of contracts, but said it was done within the delegation of authority framework – a set of guidelines boards and executives have to comply with.

"The SABC cannot grind to a halt because there is not a board," Aguma told MPs.

Earlier this month it emerged that several deals were signed before Christmas after the last of the board members had resigned amid a parliamentary inquiry into the affairs of the beleaguered broadcaster. Aguma blamed the media for spreading misinformation.

"Business continues... the SABC has to broadcast and the officials are doing that, so contracts...are rightfully entered into...in terms of the delegation of authority framework contrary to what the press wants the public to believe."
