METRORAIL passengers are panicking after the service was brought to a screeching halt because of vandalism at the weekend.

The parastatal completely suspended its services yesterday for its technical team to conduct urgent repairs. Extensive damage by vandals early on Saturday resulted in long delays and cancellations.

Regional manager Richard Walker said the decision to suspend the service was taken in the interest of passenger safety and security.

“The shutdown will enable Transnet technical teams to do the necessary repair work. Our own teams will work with them to ensure the work is completed as soon as possible,” said Walker.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott confirmed the disruption was only meant for yesterday, and that updates would come as maintenance progressed.

Commuters took to social media to vent their frustration at the embattled service provider.

Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Janine Myburgh said it was “disgrace” for Metrorail to have no contingency plan.

“Most unfortunate that this occurred, but there must be some contingency in place.

“While it falls on a Sunday, there are still many workers dependent on this service to get to their employment,” said Myburgh.

She said much of the problem stemmed from the “archaic” infrastructure in constant need of repair or replacement.

“Security has also been a disgrace considering the reports of theft on Metrorail lines. This is as much a government concern as it is a community concern,” said Myburgh.

According to her, communities must be educated with regards to buying stolen infrastructure as there can be no market without consumers.
