UCT vice-chancellor Max Price says “responsible measures” are needed to ensure safety at the university, where classes have been suspended for another week.

Yesterday, the #FeesMustFall activists said they remain resolute with their demands.

Price said the decision to suspend lectures was not taken lightly. “In the present climate, keeping the campus open will depend on significantly increasing the levels of security.”

Student activist Simon Rakei said students aim to symbolically create a decolonised university this week.

“We’ve invited academics from across the institution to pitch the idea today (yesterday).

"It’s to move from a position which isn’t reactionary so when the ‘violence’ occurs people have an understanding of why things have reached that point.”

He said university management’s hesitance to engage students legitimately is the reason for ongoing tensions.
