SANS Souci Girls' High School's governing body (SGB) has been accused of attempting to derail the process of change at the school.

This comes after it sent a message to parents that they were not allowed to use the school for a planned meeting yesterday.

The message, sent to parents on Tuesday afternoon by SGB chairperson William Lawrence, advised them that the meeting was not sanctioned by Sans Souci.

“The premises are not available for an unofficial school meeting. The SGB will be in touch with parents, learners and staff soon,” the message read.

Billie-Jean Demas, on behalf of The Truth We Will Proclaim movement of past and present pupils and their parents, said: “We were told the SGB was going to have a meeting on Thursday evening and we wanted to have a meeting before that because we don't recognise the SGB as legitimate.

“At our first meeting last Monday evening, parents demanded a new SGB or an interim committee, which would be part of the discussions.

"Parents have not been included in the (department’s) investigation or been kept informed,” Demas said.

Greshen Chetty, of Access to Justice, which represents pupils in mediation, said parents and pupils were denied access to their own school by the SGB.

Chetty said meetings and consultations with parents would continue despite the SGB.

But Lawrence reiterated yesterday that the meeting would not go ahead on the premises.

He said the SGB was currently working on a plan of action for the amendment of the code of conduct.

The plan would be communicated to parents and the pupil body next Wednesday, he said.

Federation of Governing Bodies for South African Schools chief executive Jaco Deacon said two representatives from the federation met SGB members of the school on Tuesday to identify which aspects would need to be addressed by the department or by the SGB.
